Treading Water

December 9, 2008

What is the best contingency plan for DJs in the wake of the electro-banger market collapse of 2008? I mean dubstep is pretty cool but have fun finding MP3s on Hypemachine/going from a laptop back to vinyl/getting a hold of any dubplates unless you live in Croydon/getting any girls to get on the dancefloor.

My genius tactic is to concentrate on those occasional slower bloghouse tracks, anywhere from 90 up to 115. There is a fair bit of stuff that is still pretty electro and hard so the kids will still get involved, but far less brain-drilling, making it a bit more “party” and more inviting for mainstream/guilty pleasure chicks who like to dance to R+B and pop. At this tempo you’ll find most of the tracks you are going to be playing are more hip-hop orientated anyway so your redundant alts who have the new Lyrics Born album are also happy. You also get to play all those Diplo/Hot Chip/SebastiAn remixes and/or actual hip-hop tracks that no one else does. Then later you can move up through the BPMs taking in some authentic/space/cosmic disco perhaps and maybe end on a few carefully selected, quality bangers. Not changing the world but at least you are not rocking Toxic Avenger or whatever.

For Example:

(How far past played out is this song exactly? I don’t go out/watch MTV/listen to Triple J so I’m not sure but this remix is still good times.)

(Mash up with “Let Me Clear My Throat” or whatever it is called. Way better than it sounds…)

(Not exactly sure how this one works. But it does.)

(See? Even Ed Banger is getting in on this whole 100 BPM bizness.)

…And while we are on the subject of dubstep this mini mix from Zomby is not bad if you like head snapping snares and Mario power up noises.

Please compile these songs into and easy played format cd and mail it to me so i can listen to it as i drive around in my new weekend recreational vehicle over summer.

    That would be tops. Cheers.
